I believe he used interior IFS function with Mandelbulb.

I'm too lazy to explain... but take a look at [link] and information about Mandelbrot set [link] .

There are far too many programs that can render the Mandelbulb. Some significant programs are Subblue [link] , Mandelbulber [link] or Mandelbulb 3D [link] .
